Exploring the Link Between Environment, Nutrition and Health

Dr Minha spoke at the Soil & Nutrition Conference (SNC), the flagship gathering of the Bionutrient Food Association. This US-based non-profit has spent years building the science and the movement behind “nutrient density”: the idea that the mineral and vitamin content of our food, and therefore our health, begins in the health of the soil it grows in.

She built her talk around salutogenesis, the science of what creates health rather than merely what causes disease, and used it to draw medicine, farming, ecology and human health into a single frame. Disease, she reminded the conference, is literally “dis-ease”, a loss of harmony; and a reductionist, tick-box model that treats a patient “as a number or a barcode” will always miss the whole person.

It is a natural stage for Dr Minha. Her career has run along exactly this thread, from her academic work in nutrition and health, to her leadership roles with the NNEdPro Global Centre for Nutrition and Health in Cambridge, to the clinical nutrition that sits at the heart of Curaidh Clinic’s integrative model. One thread ran through everything she said: “an empty bag cannot stand”, a piece of wisdom she carries from humanitarian work delivering care in conflict settings, where even the best medicine fails without the nutrition to support it. It is the same conviction that once led her, at Cambridge, to push for nutrition to be taught properly within medical education.

The session offers an empowering reminder that, for patients living with chronic disease, fatigue and inflammation, what is on the plate is never a side issue.
