A Keynote in Kenya: Open Data, Nutrition and a Cambridge Exchange

Dr Minha delivered a keynote at the GODAN Ministerial Conference at Kenya’s KICC on nutrition data and food security, sparking a Cambridge–Kenya exchange.

In June 2017, Dr Minha delivered a keynote address at the Ministerial Conference on Global Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition (GODAN), held alongside the 4th AGRITEC Africa exhibition at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre in Nairobi, the soaring, cylindrical landmark that is Kenya’s most recognisable conference venue and a symbol of the city itself.

Launched in 2013 and led by the UK and US governments, GODAN champions open data as a tool to fight hunger and strengthen food security worldwide. Its 2017 ministerial conference, co-hosted with the Government of Kenya, drew around a thousand high-level participants, including agriculture ministers from across the globe, under the theme “Harnessing the Demographic Dividend Through Investment in Food and Nutrition Data.” Billed as representing Cambridge University, Dr Minha gave the keynote for the panel “Mobilizing Stakeholders to Improve the State of Nutrition Data in the Global South”, a reflection of a career that has always understood nutrition, agriculture and human health as one connected story rather than separate disciplines.

The visit bore lasting fruit. It seeded an exchange programme that brought Kenyan delegates to the following conference in Cambridge, passports, visas and a summer school included, building the kind of durable, two-way collaboration that outlasts any single event.

There was an unexpected, deeply personal coda too. When the keynote was covered in the Kenyan national press, it reconnected branches of Dr Minha’s own family who had been estranged for decades, a reminder that a professional milestone can ripple into a life in ways no one could plan.

That conviction, that what we eat, and how food reaches us, is inseparable from how well we live, remains central to Curaidh Clinic, where clinical nutrition sits at the heart of the integrative model rather than at its edges.
